In the Dairy Food Technology degree course, you will gain the necessary practical and scientific know-how to process the complex and perishable raw material milk into various dairy products. With the degree course, you are broadly positioned for a subsequent career in the dairy, food or pharmaceutical industry. You will deal with modern product technology and process engineering, shelf life, hygiene and safety of the products, chemical and microbiological analytics and the economic evaluation of the processes. Other important topics are packaging and the careful use of resources such as energy, raw materials and water.

Objectives and contents

The aim of the degree course is to impart skills in the fields of dairy technology, natural sciences (mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, microbiology), technology (process engineering, system planning, project management, etc.) as well as economics (business administration, personnel management, etc.). You will be taught the knowledge, skills and methods required for your professional activity in an application-oriented manner so that you can methodically and independently develop further knowledge on a scientific basis at any time and use it in an application-oriented manner. Didactically, we use a mixture of seminar-based teaching, exercises, case studies and internships.

Projects integrated into the study programme and the practical phase aim to promote interdisciplinary thinking and social competence. The degree course enables students to independently expand already acquired knowledge and to put it into practice in a problem-oriented manner. Graduates are able to transfer their theoretical and practical knowledge to problems from business practice and find solutions for these problems.

Course progression

The course is divided into two parts. In the 1st part of the course, which includes the 1st + the 2nd semester, the fundamentals of science, engineering and business administration are taught. In the 2nd part of the course, which extends across semesters 3 7, we teach you subject-specific and special theoretical and practical knowledge. The course has an integrated practical phase and project work in the 5th semester. Optionally, you can also complete a course semester abroad. Another practical phase and the subsequent Bachelor's thesis make up the final semester. You can complete the practical phases in national or international companies. A stay abroad can therefore be easily integrated into your studies. 


  • Is there a suitable Master's course afterwards?

    You can follow up your Bachelor's degree with a Master's course at various universities and specialise in your chosen field.

    The Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts offers the 3-semester Master’s degree course "M. Eng. in Dairy and Packaging Industry". For this Master's degree course, you fully meet the admission requirements with your Bachelor's degree. The course starts in the summer semester so that you can immediately follow your 7-semester Bachelor's degree course.

  • What does the degree course cost?

    No tuition fees are charged. However, you must pay a semester fee of approximately €390 per semester. The semester fee includes contributions to the Studentenwerk (halls of residence, university sports), student body, administrative costs and public transport. You will automatically receive a semester ticket for the use of public transport in Hanover (GVH) as well as regional transport in Lower Saxony. In addition to the semester fee, you will then have to pay the general cost of living.

  • Do I have to do an internship or apprenticeship before I study?

    If you have a general university entrance qualification or a subject-related university entrance qualification, you do not need to do a pre-course internship or training to be admitted to the Bachelor's course. You gain practical experience during your studies on the one hand in the internships in the university's laboratories and pilot plant facilities, and, on the other hand, in the practical phases that you complete in the 5th and 7th semesters outside the university in companies or research institutes.

    Nevertheless, 40 - 50% of our students have completed an apprenticeship before their course and thus already have a concrete idea of their future career field. The practical experience and skills from the training are valuable for the course and facilitate the transfer of the specialist knowledge acquired in the course into practice.

  • Is there an NC?

    At present, there is no NC. In the last two years, all applicants who met the admission requirements were admitted to the course. This will probably also be the case in the next application round (application deadline 15 July), but the situation in the future depends on the number of applications received.

  • Am I studying in a smaller group or in a large crowd?

    The study atmosphere in our department is characterised by small study groups and personal contact between students and teachers. In the 1st Part of course (1st and 2nd semesters), you will study together with the degree courses Technology of Renewable Resources and Food Packaging Technology, the group will then consist of approximately 70 - 80 students. The subject-specific lectures from the 3rd semester onwards take place in groups of 25 - 30 students and thus allow intensive study support.
